How to switch back the shutdown menu to the win XP style By CJ 16 January 2009 at 12:27 pm and have No Comments

It’s a simple question, yet a pain in the neck procedure.
A friend of mine called me yesterday to ask me where are the 3 buttons from his shutdown menu. First I didn’t understand the whole problem, but when he started to closely detail the ‘problem’ I sudden realize that I don’t have the slightest clue on how to change that to NORMAL (default) windows XP style (the 3 buttons: Stand By, Shut Down and Restart).

Now let me describe the matter more clearly. The shutdown menu was changed from the windows XP style – the 3 buttons: Stand By, Shut Down and Restart TO the classic one (when you’re in a domain) where you have to press and choose from a drop-down menu what do you want to do.

So, like any other, I googled the problem. Very fast I was finding my self reading the procedure on how to solve the issue:
Go to Control Panel -> User Accounts and click on “Change the way users log on or off”. Did that and when reached the last screen a warning was displayed telling me that the features were disabled and to enable them back I have to uninstall Client Service for NetWare. Hmmm…
The next 15 minutes were a total silence, although I did not see my friend for quite some time. Searching and searching, but nothing solid. I had to put the pieces together and finally I was able to restore the precious shutdown menu, winXP style.

Assuming that you have administrator rights, the exact procedure is this:
1. Control Panel -> Network Connections
In Network Connection right-click your internet connection and choose Properties. In the opened window, General Tab look for Client Service for NetWare. If you want to disable it uncheck (the checked) box next to it. If you want to remove it, click the option (Client Service for NetWare) and then click the Uninstall button below. Remove/disable any other services that are related to this Client Service for NetWare service.
My scenario was: removed all the services described above.

2. Restart the computer.

3. Go to Control Panel -> User Accounts and click the “Change the way users log on or off” link. Voila! It worked. Now I can do what I first found when I started to investigate this matter.
In the Change the way users log on or off screen make sure that you check the “Use the welcome screen” option, also “Use fast user switching” should be checked too if you have multiple accounts on your PC.
Apply the changes and…

That’s it.
The winXP style shutdown menu was restored.
