Last weekend I decided to install the beta version of Windows 7 to see, also test the praising which flooded the internet not too long ago. I thought this over and over and decided that the best solution will be to install it on a new hard drive, thus I will not endanger my data.

Next step was to mount the hard disk into computer case. Since I wasn’t satisfied with my HDD’s position - between the two existing ones, I was forced to come up with a solution. And this generated my ‘invention’.

I have a lot of computer spare parts (IDE cables, SATA cables, coolers, screws, clamps, fasteners etc…) in my house due to the increased flow of computer hardware which transited through my honest 10 year computer experience.

The idea is quite simple, yet very effective and also cheap. I used 18 threaded fasteners (the one used to fix, immobilize - to fasten the motherboard to the case). They were assembled in a 3 piece ‘leg’ (3 fasteners screwed together) which resulted in 6 ‘legs’. See the image below.

Those legs were then screwed into hard drive fastening holes. Of course, the number of legs can be reduced to 4, but for the purpose of this tutorial I will use all of them - 6.

With all the legs in position I mounted the hard disk into the 5.25 inch bay (the CD-ROM / DVD-ROM bay). They fitted exactly! Then fix the hard drive in position with 6 HDD screws.

That’s it! A simple, efficient and cheap solution to adapt your hard disk drive to 5.25 inch bay.

What’s a HDD screw?
There are two major categories of screws used in computer cases. These two categories refer to the screw thread. The smaller one is used for fixing optic drives (CD-ROMs, DVD-ROMs etc…) and the bigger one is used for fixing hard drives, motherboards, expansion cards brackets to the case, case covers, PSUs etc…
