YouTube enhanced 16 January 2009 at 12:03 pm by CJ

Better said is: how to have more control over YouTube videos.
Before we proceed you should know that I use this tweak in Mozilla Firefox with Grease Monkey add-on installed.

Even though YouTube already introduce the HD feature, you might ask how can you enhance YouTube even more?
- Go to userscripts and download YousableTubeFix.
NOTE: Do this after you’ve installed Grease Monkey on your Firefox web browser.

This tweak will improve, also make available some features for YouTube videos.
First, it will give you multiple options to change the video resolution (1x, 1.25x, 1.5x, 1.75x, 2x, fill, full, max, fullscreen).
Second, possibility to change the video format (Low Quality, FLV Quality, HD).
Third, lots of other useful options.

+ What comes after the Terrabyte? By CJ 30 November 2008 at 6:57 pm and have No Comments

I always wondered what comes after the mighty Terrabyte. In this world of evolution I guess that this information might turn very useful.

Mozilla Labs: Ubiquity

Mozilla’s Ubiquity.

I wanted to start this post by asking how many of you do open a new web browser window or tab, go to Google to start your research when you’re looking for a movie, map, restaurant, club etc…

Or when you want to translate a text, you have to open a new window/tab, go to Google Translate or an online/offline dictionary, then go back to the web page which contains the text, copy that text, again go to Google translate page that you’ve just opened or dictionary and paste it down to translate the text.

But since I know that you and me did just that for a thousand times, I thought that is time to introduce a revolution in web browsing user’s experience – Ubiquity. This is not as big as AURORA, but it’s a must-have addon for Firefox.

+ Adobe CS3 remove procedure By CJ 11 November 2008 at 10:30 pm and have 5 Comments

Ok. This might seem a little awkward, but there are some times when nothing seems to work properly. In my case, Adobe’s Creative Suite 3.

My problem

Was that with Adobe CS3 installed and working I ran Adobe Photoshop CS4 Portable. When I first open the Photoshop CS4 .exe file I received an error stating that Photoshop (PS) cannot find the Color Settings. I closed (also ignored) the error message and PS CS4 Portable was working just fine.

I must say that PS CS4 Portable was a trial version (no serial number was provided). I just wanted to TRY the product.

On the day after I tried to open PS CS3 (full version) and received the error regarding the Color Settings, I chose not to ignore the error and go to the actual location to see if the folder is actually present or has been somehow deleted. The folder along with the color settings were there alright. The location is: “C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_USERNAME\Application Data\Adobe\Color\Settings”.

After navigating to Color Settings location, when I opened up PS CS3 again I didn’t receive the error. BUT… whenever I tried to open or create a file (via File -> Open or File -> New) I received a warning message stating that PS cannot find the Version Cue .dll file from: “C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Adobe Version Cue CS3\Client\3.0.0\”. After closing/confirming the message PS simply crashed. And the same thing happened whenever I tried to open or create a file. In other words my precious PS CS3 was useless.

So, like I did before I tried to find the bloody folder only that this time the Version Cue folder wasn’t there!?

Solutions

No1

I Googled the problem a bit and found out that I should update the Version Cue client in order to get rid of the problem, my problem :D

I never tried this solution because there was no point in doing that since Version Cue folder was no longer present on my computer.

However, you can find the updates here.

No2

Remove the software via Control Panel -> Add/Remove. In case of failure re-install the application then try to remove it via Add/Remove.

I’ve had installed on my PC the entire Adobe Master Collection Creative Suite 3. This means that I could’ve tried to repair the installation before uninstalling.

Well it wasn’t so easy. In fact it wasn’t possible at all. I tried to remove the CS3 via Add/Remove, but there was no way I could open that utility.

Since I could not remove the software suite via Control Panel – Add/Remove I figured out that if I try to re-install the suite I should be able to remove it.

Surprise! I couldn’t re-install it either. :(

I let this one last because it requires a small amount of self-confidence in computer knowledge, personal computer knowledge.

So.. the solution is quite simple and painless if the correct precautions are taken.

WARNING!

Before you try this you should back up your personal files. I suggest making an image of the entire System partition (“C:” partition) using Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image.

After taking the necessary precautions you should proceed to remove the Adobe CS3 via AdobeCS3 Clean Script. You can download it from here.

This is a simple executable file which, once opened brings up the System Console and after a long and boring questioning session you succeed in removing the bloody CS3 from your computer. You have two choices (levels) which I find very useful:

  • 1. Remove every Adobe Component and only leave the Acrobat Reader.
  • 2. Remove the entire Adobe Suite and Acrobat.

I chose 1. And it worked!

:D

Finally! Now that I managed to remove the Adobe CS3 from my PC I don’t know if I would ever install CS3. I’m thinking to take a step further and use the fresh out of the kitchen Adobe CS4.

I hope I made my self useful with these tips.

Safe hunting,

+ 7 days to go By CJ 23 October 2008 at 8:49 pm and have No Comments

Today 23rd of October we are 7 days away till a new version of Linux Ubuntu is released.

I don’t know about you guys, but I’m tired of Windows. Since 1998 I’m using it like crazy: Win98 & Win98SE were my workshop, then it came Windows Me, also Windows 2000 and in 2002 Windows XP both home & professional came into my world.

By now you probably wonder: But hey, where’s Vista?

You see, that was the exact reason I chose Linux. Three months ago I was facing the following problem: “Should I choose Windows Vista or Linux Ubuntu?

Of course, you can ask me what in the world possessed me to actually switch from good old WinXP Pro to Windows Vista or Ubuntu Linux.

A friend of mine likes to advise me: “if it’s working properly why the need to change it?“.

I’m using Windows XP right from the beginning: 2002 and never change it since. Whenever I bumped into a problem I took the time to do some research also testing (on my expense) and always find the answer/solution. All of that till 2004 when I started to use the computer 8 hours per day. Since then Windows XP never stopped disappointing me when in most need. So, I guess that answers my friends’ question.

Have you opened up the Windows Task Manager? If so, do you comprehend the entire rubbish listed in that window? If not, don’t worry it’s better that you don’t! Thus you spare quite a headache :D

Well, in my case, on the regular basis WinXP ‘eats’ 800+ Mb of system memory and the CPU… well it’s complicated :D

Should I tell you about Firefox which manages to eat 90% of the CPU from 5 to 5 minutes? Or should I tell you about the TCP/IP Limit? Or probably you are more interested in windows silent updates without users’ consent? And lots of unknown problems, because most of them are still unknown to Microsofts’ Troubleshooter.

That’s why I decided that it will be a good time to change my operating system (OS). So, I had 2 major choices:

  • from Microsoft: Windows Vista Ultimate ’cause I want all the features to be available
  • the second choice was Linux Ubuntu ’cause this seemed to me that it can outrun Vista ;)

Since Vista’s well known for its futuristique UI (user interface) and great security, it will be adequate to use an OS that properly fits our need for speed and security. You all know the bloody Vista, but I’m pretty sure that you don’t have a clue (I mean no offense) about Ubuntus’ alien UI, rock solid security and tremendous speed in execution. Therefore I’m only showing you a glimpse of Ubuntus’ features.

Now, try doing that in Vista with an AMD Athlon 1700+. The result will be an EPIC failure.

One good thing about Ubuntu is that it DOESN’T eat ALL your CPU/RAM. It’s very, very well optimized. And… that’s why I chose it :D [pardon the repetition, but I couldn't help it]

Another great thing about Ubuntu: Is absolutely FREE!

You can download it from here.

To prove to you that this OS is a revelation also a revolution, look at these guys who actually build computers specially designed/optimized for Ubuntu.

ZaReason - PCs for Ubuntu

That’s it. Linux Ubuntu represents by far the best alternative to Windows Vista regarding office, web browsing, editing habits. It can also be a good alternative to Windows Vista gaming side if you only wish to ;)

The reason is obvious. It consumes less hardware and financial resources. Therefore you won’t need to spend $600+ on a PC and $319.95 for an OS (Vista Ultimate, just to stick up with my preferences) just to surf the internet, watch a movie, listen your favorite music, use some office applications, from time to time play a game (if you bought a computer just for that reasons you usually play solitaire, spider solitaire, minesweeper or any other integrated games) and again, from time to time to pull your hair off when the PC stops responding to your input commands. :D

Don’t you think that is it worth it to learn how to use a new OS? And, in exchange you’ll pay less or nothing  for the hardware resources (because in most cases a PC upgrade it’s not required), you get THE OS free and then you can enjoy your life.

I hope you take a moment, think well and then take the right decision if you plan on changing your OS.

Safe install ;)

+ asus p5nd2-sli mobo with attitude By CJ 09 October 2008 at 5:16 pm and have No Comments

I never thought that a motherboard will ‘finish’ me off.
Yeah guys these things come when your expectations are at the lowest level.
Last week my 2nd motherboard, which is a ASUS P5ND2-SLI decided that the weekend will be a good time to die (figuratively). After a maintenance routine, which consisted in a complete disassembling of all my PC components and also took me 3 weeks just to start out, I gladly power up the PC…

  • On first attempt: NO BIOS Post available (both visual and audio).
  • On the second attempt: Post available – just audio (1 long, 3 short beeps). Hmm..
  • On my third attempt: Both Posts OK, Blue Screen after WinXP load screen.
  • On the fourth attempt: Both Posts OK, artifacts displayed after WinXP load screen.
  • The 5th attempt up till the 50 mark consisted in a random variation of all 4 events listed above, but never passed over the WinXP load screen.

In other words my Saturday was ruined!

Now, to detail what just happened with my bloody PC (the backup one).
The complete disassembling procedure resided in un-rack/un-socket all the components, including stock northbridge cooler. After the cleansing, then reassembly of all the components, when my computer acted normal till WinXP load screen, I kept receiving a message on the BIOS Post screen stating that:

Warning! Now system is in safe mode. Please re-setting cpu or memory frequency in cmos setup.

After I saw that, resetting the CMOS also removal of the BIOS battery for several minutes was next best thing which I though that will make the difference. But guess what? The freakin’ PC wouldn’t boot into WinXP.

I did some research over the internet looking for BIOS POST Sound codes, but they were all so.. overall. There were 3 major sound codes: 1 long, 1 long – 2 short, 1 long – 3 short. I encounter the last one plus 1 long – 4 short beeps!?! I tried to start the PC with a different VGA Card, another working DDRAM SDRAM module, another HDD with WinXP installed, switch RAM modules between mobo slots etc…

By the way the best website on which you’ll find BIOS Post Sound (or Beep) codes is: BIOS Central. I don’t say that this is the only one ;)

After 10 tormenting hours of trial and error I decided that there are more important things in the world that I’ll miss if I try to figure out what’s wrong with the son of gun. So I quit determined to take the motherboard to warranty first thing on Monday.

Monday, 06 October 2008 @ mobo warranty.

Service guy politely asks me what seems to be the problem with my motherboard when IT first loaded its BIOS. I explained with an abundance of details what was the problem and the guy decided to prove me that the mobo will boot a WinXP install. And the bloody thing just did that.
I got home, reassembled THE thing, powered it up and it was ALIIIIIVVVVE!

What seems to be the Conclusion:

When nothing out there seem to work for your computer (in my case THE motherboard) it’s for the best to entirely disassembly the whole thing. Leave it for several hours then reassemble it and hope that through some freakin’ miracle it will work.

I have no explanation and to be honest I still think at what was the wrong thing which I continuously kept doing.

+ How to make your Corsair Voyager foolproof By CJ 07 October 2008 at 4:58 pm and have No Comments

This guy deserves an award.

He took a 1Gb Corsair Voyager flash pen which never stopped from breaking and decided that it would be safer if the USB stick had an aluminum case.

I had a 2Gb Voyager and had the same problem. Well, at least mine break the chain on the 3rd warranty replacement. :D

usb stick aluminum case usb stick aluminum case usb stick aluminum case usb stick aluminum case

I don’t know how good this aluminum case is compared to the original rubber casing. I mean one thing here and it’s water resistance. But, judging from these pictures, the guy took some time designing it, so I think he included some rubber garnishing.

This is a great idea and I kind of like it.
